ou are alive right now, in the body you have, in the room you’re in. This part counts. Even if you thought you’d be somewhere else by now. Even if you’re still working out how to be here.

The dog needs to go out. There’s something you want and haven’t quite admitted. Somebody you love is harder to love this week than last week. You laughed so hard at dinner that you forgot, briefly, what you were worried about. Your life has room for all of this. You don’t have to resolve it into a story about how far you’ve come.

You can stop working on yourself for a minute. The self will still be there when you get back. It has nowhere else to go.

You can care for yourself, change something that needs changing, and want more from life without making yourself a project. There is no requirement to turn everything you’ve survived into evidence of how impressive you’ve become. Even healing can acquire a performance review. Are you better yet? Stronger? Grateful for the lesson? The Department has declined to administer this review. You’re welcome here with things still unresolved, including your feelings about what happened.

Sometimes aliveness is laughing at something stupid and meaning it. Sometimes it’s wanting something enough to say so, letting yourself grieve, or becoming absorbed in something you love. You can feel it in an ordinary afternoon or a decision that changes your life. None of it requires you to become a finished person first.

You’re allowed to be loved before you finish becoming whoever you think you’re supposed to be. You’re allowed to like your life on a Wednesday for no reason. You’re allowed to take this document down off the wall and lose it under a stack of mail and never read it again. It still applies.

Why this exists.

Why this exists.

The Department of Aliveness is a made-up institution I built because I wanted a place that would take the whole person seriously without asking them to become an improvement project. Somewhere grief could matter, and so could what you were looking forward to on Saturday. Somewhere you could want more from life without having to explain what was wrong with you first.

“The breath you take before you cry and the one you take before you laugh, which sometimes turn out to be the same breath.”

I gave it a name, started issuing permits nobody asked for, and wrote field reports nobody required. A Department seemed as good a way as any to make room for being human.

01

I write, weekly.

I write, weekly.

I write about the rules we inherit about healing, achievement, and what makes a life count, and what happens when those rules no longer fit. There are stories from my own life, questions I’m still working through, and the absurd things that happen while we’re trying to take ourselves seriously. Read for a different way to understand your life, or for the recognition of something you’ve known but haven’t had words for.

02

Try it in your own life.

Try it in your own life.

The writing comes with short practices: ways to notice what you feel, follow something that interests you, or make room for something you want. Take a question into your afternoon. Try a small experiment. See what happens when an idea becomes something you actually do. You get to decide what’s useful and what you want to keep.

03

We do some of this together.

We do some of this together.

Work with me one to one, join a conversation in the Living Room, or spend longer with a small group in a cohort or retreat. We make room for what you’re going through and what you want from life, with conversation, shared experiences, and people you can get to know over time. Come to feel more alive, be known as you are, and try ways of living that don’t depend on becoming someone better first.

I founded the Department, and I was its first client.

By day, I’m a VP leading global research on what makes people come alive at work. I love it. I study how people experience belonging, recognition, and the possibility of doing something that matters. I bring that curiosity here, too: an ear for what people are actually saying, an interest in the conditions shaping their lives, and a willingness to question explanations we’ve learned to accept.

I’m also a kundalini yoga therapist. I work with breath, movement, sound, and attention to what you’re experiencing in your body. Sometimes we begin with something you can name. Sometimes we notice a tightening, a restlessness, or a moment of ease before the words arrive. We follow what’s happening at a pace you have a say in, making room to feel, respond, and discover what supports you.

I bring both to the Department: curiosity about the forces shaping our lives, and attention to how we actually experience them. We can question a story we’ve inherited, notice what happens when we try something different, and find out what helps us feel more alive.

Our culture.

Our culture.

Our culture.

Presence over performance. Showing up counts.

We witness. We don’t fix.

Consent first. “Pass” is always welcome.

Small counts. Two breaths. One sentence. A quiet check-in.

Sacred and ridiculous both belong here.

If you’re here, you belong. Take what you need. Come back when you can.
